What we clean down here is area rugs on original floors, a few upstairs bedrooms, and shop carpet along the strip. We use as little water as we can get away with.

What is actually on the floor here
A depot district where the rug is the main event
Madison was a rail stop before it was a city, and downtown still reads that way. The commercial row on Main Street faces the old Memphis and Charleston line with the cotton warehouses behind it, and the houses sit mostly on the far side of the tracks. Church Street, Front Street and Martin Street carry Queen Anne and Craftsman homes from the 1850s through the 1930s, and the National Register listing in 2006 drew the line around 129 acres of them.
Inside those houses, wall-to-wall carpet is hard to come by. Front rooms keep their original wood, worn smooth, with area rugs laid over the traffic paths. The soft flooring that is left tends to be upstairs under a dormer, in a back room added on decades later, or on a staircase that turns hard at the landing.

Area rugs on original floors

The half-story bedroom
Craftsman houses put bedrooms under a sloped roof, which means low ceilings, short walls and one small window. Square footage is modest, so these often land at one or two rooms starting at $40 each against a $99 job minimum. Airflow matters more than anything up there, and we set it before we pack up.

Madison added roughly 12.5% more residents in the four years after the 2020 census, and nearly every new roof came with fresh carpet under it. Out in Clift Farm and Greenbrier Preserve half the yards are still raw dirt, and red clay walks straight up light builder carpet on the stairs. New fiber, hard soil, aggressive fix.
The depot district turns that upside down. The grit here is fine and dry and has been working its way to the base of a wool pile since somebody's grandmother bought it, while the fragile part of the job is the floor underneath. Push water into that and you have traded a dirty rug for a cupped board.
Both jobs come out of the same van at the same rates. What changes on these blocks is the pace: a colorfast check under a hidden corner first, less solution, and fringes and edges worked by hand rather than run over.

Do you clean carpet in historic downtown Madison homes?
Yes, and it's usually a smaller job than a subdivision call. In the houses off Church Street and Martin Street the carpet is generally two upstairs bedrooms or a room somebody added on later, since the front of the house still has its original floors. Three rooms up to 450 square feet are $109, single rooms from $40, and the job minimum is $99. You get the total in writing first.
Is your process safe for older flooring?
Yes, because it barely uses water. Our low-moisture cleaning puts down a fraction of what a heavy wet clean does, so moisture doesn't work its way between old planks or under boards that have been there since the depot era. Rugs come up onto a barrier before we touch them. If a floor or a fiber looks like it can't take a clean, we stop and tell you, and that visit costs nothing.
Can you clean small cottages with tight rooms?
Regularly. Cottage floor plans are the norm on these blocks. We bring in small portable gear instead of heavy machines, so a narrow hall or a staircase that turns at the landing doesn't slow anything down. Beds and dressers with nowhere to go get cleaned around, with blocks under the legs to keep finish off damp fiber. Tight rooms move less air, so we set airflow before we leave. Still about an hour.
How is cleaning an older home different from a new build?
Different soil, different risk. In a 2025 house off Balch Road the problem is red clay ground into carpet that is barely broken in, and the fix is aggressive. In an 1890s house near Main Street the soil is fine and dry and sits deep in wool, while the part that can actually be damaged is the floor under the rug. So we use less water, more hand work and a slower pass. The price sheet doesn't change.
